I honestly think that a lot of the allure of this beer for people in the Northeast US is the fact it is not generally available out here. As a result, Fat Tire gets an air of exoticness out here which it really doesn't deserve. That a beer gets bumped in the ratings because of its relative scarcity in a certain market is not a problem for me. As a result, Fat Tire gets an air of exoticness out here which it really doesn't deserve. That a beer gets bumped in the ratings because of its relative scarcity in a certain market is not a problem for me. I think beers should be linked with geography -- brews from remote places should have bonus points for being rare in your town and the local brewers should get consideration simply for being local.

Fat Tire is a drinkable yet indistinct American amber ale. It is worth trying, and it is defintely worth drinking over a number of other standard offerings in a bar.

(As an aside, the best misnaming of a beer I've heard recently was a guy in Pennsylvania who repeatedly referred to this as "Flat Tire" during a conversation. I had no desire to correct him because his mistake was so awesome.) (show less)

Wow, this smells awesome, and I'm someone who usually doesn't get a whole lot out of a beer's aroma. It smells like dark chocolate and peaty smoke, as if you could take the experience of washing down a bit of dark chocolate with a smoky single malt and turn it into a scent. I might even consider buying Glad Plug-Ins that smelled like this beer. The flavor is quite rich, with more of the chocolate and smoke coupled with lots of dark malt, some alcohol and the smallest bit of balancing bitter... (show more)

The flavor is quite rich, with more of the chocolate and smoke coupled with lots of dark malt, some alcohol and the smallest bit of balancing bitterness. The finish is warm and somewhat boozy, also not unlike a good Scotch. I am sad to not be drinking this from a snifter in front of a fireplace while wearing a smoking jacket and resting my slippered feet on a bearskin rug, for it seems like this beer demands that sort of thing. Certainly worth checking out, though make plans to drink it with dessert or afterwards. (show less)
