Pours dark and thick like black oil. Thick light brown-off white head. Strong chocolate notes in the nose w/ some roasted malt also. Taste is sweet up front with a kick of acidic hop or some other astringency. The carbonation comes through heavy to add to the harshness that the hot alcohol gives off. I honestly think that a lot of the allure of this beer for people in the Northeast US is the fact it is not generally available out here. As a result, Fat Tire gets an air of exoticness out here which it really doesn't deserve. That a beer gets bumped in the ratings because of its relative scarcity in a certain market is not a problem for me. Wow, this smells awesome, and I'm someone who usually doesn't get a whole lot out of a beer's aroma. It smells like dark chocolate and peaty smoke, as if you could take the experience of washing down a bit of dark chocolate with a smoky single malt and turn it into a scent. I might even consider buying Glad Plug-Ins that smelled like this beer.
